A sitemap is a list of pages that helps describe a website’s structure. An HTML sitemap serves visitors, while an XML Sitemap supplies URL information to search engines. A Joomla website may use different tools for these tasks.
HTML sitemap
This is a normal page of links, often grouped by section. It supplements menus and search. Include meaningful labels and publicly accessible content rather than internal service pages.
XML Sitemap
An XML sitemap contains absolute page addresses. The loc element identifies a URL, while an optional lastmod reflects a significant page change. Do not automatically replace it with the current date whenever the sitemap is requested.
A Sitemap file is limited to 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed. Larger collections use multiple files and a Sitemap index. Include preferred URLs intended for indexing, avoiding redirects, errors and restricted pages.
Sitemaps in Joomla
Joomla extensions such as OSMap or JSitemap can generate sitemaps from component and menu data. Check compatibility and support for the content types in use. A sitemap covering standard articles does not necessarily cover the entire website.
After configuring Joomla, open the sitemap and inspect its URLs and language versions. An XML sitemap can be declared in robots.txt and submitted through search engine tools. Submission aids discovery but does not guarantee indexing.
Summary
HTML sitemaps help visitors, while XML Sitemaps help crawlers. Joomla sites need current URLs, correct content coverage and checks after changes.
